BIEA has picked experts from across the STEM field to carefully evaluate every entry from beginning to end.

Members of our 2019 Committee and Judging team include (Sorted by alphabetical order of surname):

Gareth Bullock

Gareth is BIEA's President. He joined the board of the British Council as its trustee for from 2012, officially retired in November 2018. During his six-year tenure, his extensive financial strategy expertise was invaluable to the council, assisting the executive team on the council’s delivery of financial objectives. He helped to formulate its commercial strategy, especially in development in the international arena. Gareth has held numerous board positions in a wide range of multinational organisations around the world.

Jane Dowden

Jane is the Education Innovations Manager for the British Science Association with previous experience working for Inspire! and as the Learning Resource Coordinator for the London Science Museum.

Dr. Shaun Fitzgerald

Shaun is an academic and business leader, he is the Director of the Royal Institution (Ri). He is a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor at the Cambridge University’s Department of Engineering, and a Teaching Fellow in Engineering at Girton College.

Prof. Yike Guo

Yike is a Professor in the Department of Computing at Imperial College London, with experience in computing science. He has held numerous roles in related companies and projects, for example, he is the Principal Investigator of the European Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) eTRIKS project, a €23M project that is building a cloud-based informatics platform.

David Hanson

David is BIEA's STEM Chairman and is an influential senior education expert. He is the Founder of the iTrust charity and former CEO of the UK Independent Association of Prep Schools IAPS, UK Ofsted Inspector and Director of Education, Academic Director of United Learning Trust charity, Chairman of the UK Association of Education Assessment Inspectors and Advisers, CEO of the Teaching Awards Trust and Editor in Chief of the British Curriculum and Assessment Journal.

Dr. Alex Holmes

Alex is a BIEA International STEM Youth Innovation Competition designer with over 20 years of  experience in teaching and STEM teacher training. She received a 2015 National Science Teaching Award for her contribution to STEM education, has spoken at many international conferences on increasing engagement in STEM and has also authored several STEM school books.

Louise Medland

Louise recently joined the BT Digital Impact and Sustainability team in BT as the Schools Programme Manager. She manages the Barefoot programme which is funded and managed by BT in partnership with Computing at School. Launched in 2014, Barefoot provides primary school teachers with simple and accessible resources to bring the computing curriculum to life. Helping to prepare pupils aged between five and 11 years old to thrive in an increasingly digital world. To date Barefoot has reached over 60% of UK primary schools with 70,000 teachers accessing resources and two million children taught.

Amelia Perry

Amelia is the manager of the Big Bang Competition which aims to recognise and reward young people's achievements in all areas of STEM. Amelia has a background in Biological Sciences and has worked in various areas of science communication.

Stephen Prior

Stephen is a Reader in Unmanned Air Vehicles within the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton. His research interests are in the areas of Drone Design, Autonomous Unmanned Systems, Robotics and Design Engineering.

Raul Quesada

Raul is a Senior Research Associate at the Materials Chemistry Centre, UCL. His current research focuses on semiconductor photochemistry.

Prof. Claudio Sillero

Claudio is Born Free Foundation’s Chief Scientist, he is based at Oxford University's Wildlife Conservation Research Unit (WildCRU). With a background in wildlife monitoring, disease dynamics and protected area management. He is Chair of the IUCN Species Survival Commission Canid Specialist Group and founder of the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme.
