Committee and Judges - 2021
In 2021, BIEA looks forward to see many more STEM and ecological experts in joining us to judge the "Repack to Restore Our World" Competition!

Gareth Bullock
Gareth is BIEA's President. He joined the board of the British Council as its trustee for from 2012, officially retired in November 2018. During his six-year tenure, his extensive financial strategy expertise was invaluable to the council, assisting the executive team on the council’s delivery of financial objectives. He helped to formulate its commercial strategy, especially in development in the international arena. Gareth has held numerous board positions in a wide range of multinational organisations around the world.
Rick Chandler
Rick is the Chair of Communications Management Association (CMA) who has 30+ years of experience in global companies in the Telecommunications, Pharmaceutical, Retail, Aerospace and Government sectors. He is active in Mentoring and works with the UCL IDEALondon Post Accelerator including their TRIANGLE 5G Testbed.
Prof. Maria Charalambides
Maria is a Professor in Mechanics of Materials in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London. Her published research includes material modelling and mechanical characterisation of soft polymeric solids and specifically foods, micromechanics models of particulate filled polymeric composites as well as cellular structures, experimental and numerical modelling of industrial food processes such as rolling, extrusion and cutting, development of inverse indentation methods material characterisation of polymers, and fracture and deformation in paint and adhesive coatings.
Chris Coode
Chris is the Deputy Chief and Head of Education and Training at Thames 21. He worked as the Education Coordinator at the London Aquarium, and he has worked as a warden on marine wildlife reserves along the coast of Dorset and Cornwall.
Jane Dowden
Jane is the Education Innovations Manager for the British Science Association with previous experience working for Inspire! and as the Learning Resource Coordinator for the London Science Museum.
Dr. Shaun Fitzgerald
Shaun is an academic and business leader, he is the Director of the Royal Institution (Ri). He is a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor at the Cambridge University’s Department of Engineering, and a Teaching Fellow in Engineering at Girton College.
Prof. Jason Hallett
Jason is the Professor of Sustainable Chemical Technology at the Imperial College London. He has authored over 90 articles and holds 4 patents. His current research interests involve the solvation behaviour of ionic liquids and the use of ionic liquids in the production of lignocellulosic biofuels, sustainable chemical feedstocks, vaccine manufacturing and waste recycling (particularly for metal-contaminated solid materials).
David Hanson
David is BIEA's STEM Chairman and is an influential senior education expert. He is the Founder of the iTrust charity and former CEO of the UK Independent Association of Prep Schools IAPS, UK Ofsted Inspector and Director of Education, Academic Director of United Learning Trust charity, Chairman of the UK Association of Education Assessment Inspectors and Advisers, CEO of the Teaching Awards Trust and Editor in Chief of the British Curriculum and Assessment Journal.
Dr. Alex Holmes
Alex is a BIEA International STEM Youth Innovation Competition designer with over 20 years of experience in teaching and STEM teacher training. She received a 2015 National Science Teaching Award for her contribution to STEM education, has spoken at many international conferences on increasing engagement in STEM and has also authored several STEM school books.
Raul Quesada
Raul is a Senior Research Associate at the Materials Chemistry Centre, UCL. His current research focuses on semiconductor photochemistry.
Dr. Lynda White
Lynda is Principal Teaching Fellow in Experimental Design in the Department of Mathematics at the Imperial College London. Her research interests are in Experimental Design and she has designed numerous experiments for other departments in the College.
Vincent Burke
Vincent Burke is a highly experienced communications professional. He specialises in podcasting, film-making and strategic PR advice. He also runs courses in public speaking and how to use the media effectively. He has worked successfully for high-profile organisations such as the General Medical Council, the Law Society, London Chamber of Commerce, Deloitte and the Mayor of London as well as ten years in the Civil Service.
Tyrhonda Knowles Glinton
Tyrhonda is a Business Analyst at the Department of Transformation and Digitization (DTD). She has a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Information Systems from The University of The Bahamas, AA, Information Technology from BTVI and has a number of international certifications. She is also certified as a Youth Leader from the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture completing the youth leadership program in 2012. She is member of The Women & Girls Mentoring Coalition founded by Mrs. Patricia Minnis, Wife of The Prime Minister of The Bahamas. She created FEM STEM Bahamas to showcase the opportunities in STEM for young girls.
Peter Gullivan
Peter is responsible for overseeing and coordinating the various family events and activities run at the Royal Institution. This includes the popular Family Fun Days and Summer Schools programme, along with other events and workshops throughout the year. He also contributes to the various international projects run by the Royal Institution, including touring the world-famous Christmas Lectures to Japan, Singapore and Hong Kong. Peter studied Zoology at the University of Sheffield, combining studying with running science outreach activities. After graduating, Peter moved to Switzerland to work at Kandersteg International Scout Centre. Here he planned and ran a wide range of activities, including but not limited to trips over glaciers and environmental education activities. He now is happily back in the UK.
Lisa Perry
Lisa programmes science lectures, talks and ‘Lates’ style events at the Royal Institution. She says she “loves learning from and highlighting the extraordinary work happening across the world. It is now more than ever vitally important to get as many diverse audiences as possible to explore and discover science.”
Lee Saw
Lee Saw is a senior chemistry excellent teacher at SMK Seri Bintang Utara, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She holds Bachelor of Education (Honors) from University Science of Malaysia. She is a winner of Global Teacher Award 2019 and won 1st Place Best Science Teacher in Southeast Asia in the year 2016. She also awarded as National STEM Icon Teacher in 2017. She involved as the master trainer and panel of writers of the chemistry syllabus and module in the Ministry of Education Malaysia. She was selected as one of the MOE Influencer. She is also active in co-curricular activities especially STEM as a mentor of innovation competition and STEM carnival coordinator. She is also active in writing chemistry reference books and action studies on improving chemistry learning. She has been elected as Vice Chairman of the STEM Teachers Association of Malaysia. She has successfully organized various educational conferences, colloquiums, and workshops in Malaysia to strengthen the quality of education in Malaysia. Her famous principle is "fix the normal, get it right".
Eva Fryk
Eva is a Regional Network Lead for STEM Learning Limited responsible for the West Midlands Region. Managing a network of Science Learning Partnerships, Computing Hubs and STEM Ambassador Hubs as well as managing stakeholder relationships across the region to support the organisations aim of a world-leading science, technology, engineering and mathematics education for all young people across the UK. Prior to coming to Stem Learning, Eva has worked for EngineeringUK, supporting employers with their STEM outreach strategies and engaging with stakeholders to increase opportunities for young people.
David Savin
David Savin leads quality assurance of exhaust systems from a global supplier base into our assembly plants, making sure that the parts produced by his suppliers always safe and compliant with regulations.
Alice Castle
Alice Castle has over 25 years’ experience making educational programmes and websites for the BBC and other international organisations. She has worked in the BBC Science unit, at Newsround, BBC News School Report and on co-productions in China, Egypt and the USA. In recent years she has been training international journalists, editing books and managing an oral history collection for the BBC.
